For over a decade, Easterseals has been a lifeline for the Hudson family, providing not just services but also hope and transformation. When Christian (Chris) was nearly two years old, he was diagnosed with autism, leaving his mother, Tiffany, feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the future. Thankfully, their healthcare provider referred them to Easterseals, where Tiffany enrolled in our Onsite Caregiver Training and met Anna, their Autism Training Specialist.
Onsite Caregiver Training focuses not only on teaching the child new skills but also on equipping the entire family to better understand and support their loved one’s needs. In addition to this training, Tiffany has received ongoing consultative services, which proved essential when she encountered significant challenges at Chris’ school.
As Chris prepared to start school, Tiffany, like any parent, felt the anxiety of sending her child off to classes for the first time. However, her concerns were heightened by Chris’ unique challenges. Kindergarten was particularly difficult — Chris struggled in his public school, facing frequent suspensions, an uncooperative principal, and, worst of all, the use of improper restraints. Tiffany felt overwhelmed and unheard.
Anna worked closely with Tiffany to advocate for Chris’s transfer to a school within the Special School District, a pivotal moment in his journey. Chris transferred to Litzsinger School in the second grade, and from that point on, everything began to change.
Although the transition to Litzsinger was initially challenging, it was there that Chris began to thrive. He transformed from a child struggling in a hostile environment to a model student. He participated in school events, made friends, and by the eighth grade, was even nominated for an award for this growth and character — a testament to how far he had come. As Chris now begins his freshman year at a new school, the progress he has made is nothing short of remarkable.
Chris’s brothers, Noah and Nathan, have also played a crucial role in his journey. They’ve become his biggest supporters, teaching him everyday skills like making noodles in the microwave. Initially hesitant, Noah and Nathan joined Sibshop, an Easterseals’ support group designed specifically for siblings of children with autism, where they can connect with peers who understand their experiences. This network of support has been invaluable for the entire family.
Looking ahead, Tiffany is exploring programs for older children with autism to help Chris continue developing his social skills and comfort in public settings. Easterseals remains her most trusted resource. Empowered by her experience, Tiffany now shares her journey with other families facing similar challenges, offering guidance and support, especially to those transitioning to Litzsinger.
Reflecting on their journey, Tiffany is filled with gratitude for the support they’ve received from Anna and the entire Easterseals team. The change in Chris is undeniable. “The results are night and day,” she says.
