Meet Robin: From Unsure Employment to Employee of the Month
Robin exemplifies the power of meeting people where they are, building on their strengths, and empowering them to achieve milestones once thought unattainable.
Robin
Robin came to Easterseals Midwest in January 2022, shortly after graduating from high school. While his parents were uncertain whether employment was part of his future, they were determined not to close the door on that possibility. Recognizing his potential and his own goal of exploring employment opportunities, Robin began services with Community Connections and joined the Volunteer Focus Group.
As Robin’s skills and engagement grew, he and his support team determined that he was ready to take the next step. In July 2023, he transitioned into the RISE (Reaching Independence and Successful Employment) program to further develop job readiness skills and actively pursue his goal of employment. Through RISE, Robin gained valuable experience interning with community partners including Operation Breakthrough, Union Station, Salvation Army, NAWS, and A Turning Point. He strengthened skills in organization, sequencing, following directions, staying on task, and retaining job duties and expectations. Robin’s dedication stood out—he consistently ranked as one of the top participants in curriculum performance.
In addition, Robin took part in Easterseals’ Self-Determination courses, where he further developed confidence, independence, and self-advocacy. His hard work paid off. In May 2025, Robin graduated from the RISE program after securing employment with IHOP. Since starting his job, he has thrived in his new environment, earning praise for his flexibility, positive attitude, and ability to adapt to new management and team members.
Most recently, Robin was recognized as Employee of the Month for August at IHOP! Robin received this honor from his manager, who praised his flexibility and positive attitude through many recent changes, including adjusting to a new manager, a new dishwasher, the addition of a bus person, and a new tip system. Robin has taken each change in stride, continues to grow and improve, and shows up each shift with a smile.
Robin’s journey demonstrates that with empowerment, strength-based supports, and outcome-focused services, individuals can achieve what once seemed impossible. Today, Robin continues to stay connected through Easterseals’ community group events and activities, where he enjoys building friendships and engaging with his community.
