Paper Hearts, Powerful Voices: IEC Spreads Valentine's Cheer at the Library

With handmade cards and unshakeable smiles, IEC members turned a quiet library afternoon into a celebration of connection and confident self-advocacy.

Springfield/Bolivar IEC

At a corner of a local library in Springfield, the usual silence gave way to soft laughter and the rustle of paper hearts.

Members of the Springfield/Bolivar Individual Engagement Committee (IEC) stood near the entrance, hands full of handmade Valentine’s cards. Red and pink envelopes peeked out like bright symbols of kindness, and one by one, they approached library patrons.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” someone said, offering a card with a dependable smile.

Surprise flickered across faces. Then warmth... then conversation.

The IEC gathers each month to grow as self-advocates, guided by four pillars: Connect, Innovate, Empower, Advocate. This simple act of crafting cards and sharing sweet treats brought each pillar to life.

By the end of the afternoon, the table was lighter, with fewer cards and fewer treats, but the space felt fuller.
