Supporting the Whole Person
Several months ago, a tornado moved through St. Louis, damaging homes and upending daily life. For a lot of people, stability disappeared in a matter of hours.
Melissa was among those displaced.
For years, Melissa has received employment services through Easterseals Midwest. Work has been a steady part of her life - something familiar, something earned. When her housing situation suddenly changed, that consistency mattered. Even as circumstances shifted, trusted relationships held.
With support from Horizon Housing Development Company, Melissa was able to secure a new apartment. Horizon provides permanent supportive and transitional housing for individuals with developmental disabilities, helping people move from uncertainty toward stability. The apartment was safe. It was furnished. It gave her a place to land.
But it wasn’t quite finished.
The essentials were there, yet the details were missing. Bare cupboards. No pillows. No dishes or cleaning supplies - the small tools of daily life that turn shelter into something livable. It was housing, sure. It just didn’t feel like home yet.
That’s when Melissa’s employment services team stepped in.
Staff gathered what was needed: kitchenware, cleaning and organization supplies, pillows for rest. They pooled resources so Melissa could choose additional items herself. Support arrived not as one overarching gesture, but as a series of practical ones. Ordinary objects. Meaningful weight.
This was never about taking over. Melissa participated. She decided. Her independence remained fully intact.
Because supporting the whole person means recognizing how everything adds up. Housing affects work. Work shapes routine. Routine supports well-being. When one piece is missing, the others strain. When they align, everything steadies.
Today, Melissa is settling into her space. The apartment feels lived in. Routines are re-forming. The disruption has dimmed down.
She isn’t defined by the storm that displaced her anymore, but by the life she continues to build - with steady partnerships, thoughtful support, and dignity at the center.
