A World Full of Wonder
Seven-year-old Tristen loves learning about space.
Ask him about black holes, planets, or astronauts, and he is ready with an answer. His curiosity runs deep, and his dream is clear. One day, he wants to become an astronaut.
Today, Tristen eagerly shares what he is learning. For years, that was not possible.
Searching for Answers
As a toddler, Tristen was not meeting the same milestones as his younger sister. While she began using words, Tristen struggled to communicate. His mother, Nichelle, knew something was not right.
“I knew that he wanted to tell me something,” Nichelle said. “I could tell that he would get frustrated because I wasn’t understanding him.”
Determined to help her son, Nichelle searched for answers. She pursued evaluations, researched resources, and advocated for support while waiting for services.
Then she received a call from The Center for Hearing & Speech Powered by Easterseals.
Learning to Be Heard
At The Center for Hearing & Speech Powered by Easterseals, Tristen began working with speech therapists who helped him strengthen the skills needed to communicate clearly and confidently.
Through speech therapy, he learned how to sound out difficult words, produce challenging speech sounds, and position his lips and tongue correctly. His therapists worked with him on sounds like "R" while helping him build the confidence to keep trying when communication felt difficult.
One therapist, Lauren, made a lasting impact.
“She helps me sound the words out,” Tristen said. “She knows how I do and how I am.”
Session by session, Tristen's communication improved. He became more confident expressing his thoughts, sharing stories, and explaining the subjects he loves most. Then came the breakthrough his family had been waiting for.
“I used to talk to nobody, and nobody could hear what I was talking about,” Tristen said. “But now I can explain what I'm talking about.”
Reaching for the Future
Today, Tristen fills family conversations with stories about school, black holes, and the latest facts he has discovered about space. For Nichelle, those conversations are a gift.
“What makes me the proudest is that Tristen wants to try,” she said. “He wants to learn and he wants to be better.”
As Tristen continues building his communication skills, he is doing more than finding words. He is discovering newfound confidence, connection, and a path toward the future he imagines among the stars.
