What Is a DSP?
DSPs walk alongside people with disabilities in their homes and communities, helping them build skills for everyday life like cooking dinner, managing money, catching the bus, and showing up for work. Small steps and big strides.
This is relationship-based work. You learn routines, you notice progress, and you celebrate wins that others might miss: a first independent grocery trip, a confident handshake, a goal met after weeks of practice.
A shift might begin with the smell of coffee and a simple question: “What’s on the plan today?” By the end of it, something has moved forward, whether that's confidence, independence, or trust.
It’s hands-on work. Above that, it's real work. The kind where you see growth happen in real time.
No Experience Required
You don’t need a college degree or years of experience on your resume to excel in a role like this. Patience, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are some of the key skills you will need. We provide paid training from day one, with structured onboarding and clear expectations. You won’t be thrown in and told to swim. We walk beside you.
Mentorship is part of the rhythm here. Seasoned staff share what they know: tips, tools, encouragement. And there is a path forward.
DSPs gain foundational experience, then grow into lead roles, advanced certifications, or new departments. Many leaders began as DSPs.
This can be a starting point. It can also be a career.
Why It Matters
Community inclusion looks like someone choosing their own lunch, signing their own lease, and greeting neighbors by name. It sounds like laughter in a library or the shuffle of feet at a job site. The steady sight of independence taking root.
DSPs help make that possible.
The work supports dignity as a daily practice. You’re not doing it for someone; you’re working with them. Shoulder to shoulder. And somewhere along the way, something shifts.
- You help build independence.
- Independence builds confidence.
- Confidence builds a life with more choice.
That matters.
