A Seat for Everyone: Prepping for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving can be a lot to take in. If you or a loved one have sensory-processing needs, it can even feel daunting. You can't plan for every moment, but a little prep helps the day feel calmer and more joyful for everyone. Use what fits your family.

Before you go

• Ask the host about timing, guests, food, and a quiet spot to decompress if needed.
• For children, talking through the day together with photos or a picture schedule can help.
• Agree on a simple signal for "I need a break."

Pack a go-bag

• Headphones or earplugs
• Fidgets or a favorite comfort item
• Safe foods and snacks
• A tablet with favorite shows

At the gathering

• Arrive early, arrive late, or just show up for the meal. Any time spent with loved ones is time well spent.
• Take breaks before they're needed.
• Kindly speak up if relatives push hugs or food.

Plan your exit

• Park where you can leave easily.
• Remember that leaving early still counts as a good holiday.

Supporting an adult? Plan together, let them make the calls, and ask before sharing their needs with others. However long you stay, being together is what counts.
