Third Annual Kansas Autism Summit: Turning Insight Into Action

Over 100 people came together with one shared purpose in mind: to better understand, support, and empower individuals with autism across every space: schools, homes, workplaces, and communities.

From the start, we grounded ourselves in a simple but powerful idea: behavior is communication. In Promoting Positive Behavior in All Learning Spaces, Dr. Abiola Taiwo explored what behavior is telling us, and how we can respond with clarity, consistency, and evidence-based strategies that build positive, lasting skills.

As the day continued, we expanded our perspective. In How to Be a Friend, individuals shared their stories with honesty and humor, reminding us that inclusion starts with understanding. From a deep love of movies to expert-level basketball knowledge (where Stephen Curry earned the title of GOAT) we were reminded that connection begins when we truly listen thanks to an engaging presentation from Jaci Robinson & LeAnna Tillman.

We then turned to a critical, often overlooked area: mental health. In Identifying and Addressing Co-occurring Mental Health Concerns, Dr. Katrina Ostmeyer examined the realities many individuals face beyond an autism diagnosis, along with the importance of recognizing, understanding, and supporting those needs with intention. The big revelation? When we see the full picture, we can provide better, more effective care.

Finally, we looked inward. Rhythm to Restore challenged us to consider how we show up for others by first supporting ourselves. Through music, reflection, and practical techniques, Kelley Pujol explored ways to regulate our own emotions and energy. As we paused together to consider 100 different coping strategies, we were reminded that small, intentional choices can make a meaningful difference.

The summit isn’t about just learning, but also applying. When we attend and engage, we grow.
