Finding Forward: Zach's Path Back

After years of moving between hospitals and nursing homes, Zach wanted more than another temporary stop. With support from Easterseals Midwest Community Living, he is rebuilding strength, hope, and day-to-day routine - with clear goals set.

Zach’s life once moved in circles. Hospital rooms. Nursing homes. Temporary places that never quite became home. After a fall left him unable to stand, those circles tightened. The wheelchair and the bed became less like tools and more like boundaries. Days blurred. Pain lingered everywhere at once: his legs, his back, his patience. And beneath it all sat a pressing question: Is this all there is?

“I’ve been back and forth,” Zach says. Hospital. Nursing home. “Whatever home.” The repetition matters. Each move promised progress, but little changed. In the nursing home, he spent more than a year working to regain strength, only to feel his body stiffen instead. When you sit too long, he explains, everything hurts. The chair, the bed… the waiting. They pull you under instead of hold you up.

The turning point came before the path was clear. Zach set a goal that was simple and stubborn: return to the community. With Easterseals Midwest, he came home. The shift wasn’t dramatic, but it was real. Staff listened; structure replaced drift. Marilyn, his Community Living Manager, saw it right away. Zach knew what hadn’t worked. And he was ready to try again.

Therapy began. Routine came back. Zach started waking his body back up, stretching wide, repeating movements that demanded patience and grit. He changed how he ate: salad, chicken, fish. “All that good stuff,” he says. Progress didn’t arrive in a massive spree. It came the way actual recovery typically does: uneven and incremental, but moving forward.

Today, Zach is still working. Still setting lofty goals. Standing. Walking. Finding a job that lets him move ahead. Independence didn’t come back in a giant wave. It arrived in bits and pieces, earned through strong persistence and voice intact.

Change, as Marilyn reminds him, doesn’t come from giving up. It comes from speaking up, staying the course, and trusting that even slow motion still counts.
