Scott Finds a Way Forward

Scott Hoskins doesn't sugarcoat where he once started.

"My life was complicated," he says plainly. Anger spilled over. Things were broken. So were relationships. He was just a man carrying too much weight, pacing a life that felt crowded and loud. Somewhere underneath it all, he knew there was more. He just couldn't see it quite yet.

"I knew I had a purpose," Scott says. "I just didn't know what it was."

In 2016, Scott asked for help. Just a way forward; not a rescue or reset button. That's when he entered Easterseals Midwest's Community Living Program. The door opened slowly, but it was enough to take a step through.

And the support that arrived shaped his life instead of pressing onto it. A home of his own. Daily skills - cooking, budgeting, choosing what was next. Support professionals nearby, not hovering. Present, patient, willing to stay long enough for trust to grow.

People around Scott noticed the shift before he could. Cody Martin, his supervisor, recalls hearing stories of anger and isolation. What he remembers most? Joy.

"Since I've known Scotty," Cody says, "he's just been a good dude. Full of love."

Growth began to show up in the form of kindness, without any major stepping stones. Just laughter and space. That space grew wider with Technology-Enabled Support. Fewer staff hours. More room to make decisions. Take naps, even. Mistakes were once again allowed. Independence, Scott learned, isn't the absence of support, but instead, the right support at the right distance.

Looking ahead, the future feels wide open. Advocacy, peer groups, leadership, choice. As Vice President of Programs Adam Christensen puts it, the goal is progress. Not perfection.

Scott says it best himself:

"I made a lot of mistakes. But we're doing a lot better."

Today, he's energetic, goofy, and fully himself. "I try to be me," he says.

And that's really the point. When the right systems are in place and running to their full potential - when support is flexible, personal, and sustained - people are able to survive. But above all, they thrive.
