Madison Jolly seemed to be developing a little bit differently than most children. Her parents, David and Emily, quickly took notice. At only two years old, Madison was diagnosed with autism, and it was a shock to their system, even when they had suspected it.
“It was a little bit of a shock?” David recalls. “Even though we were kind of expecting it, it still felt overwhelming. We thought…what next?”
They were searching for answers. For hope. For support. Just like so many other parents.
Having known about Easterseals from her volunteer work years earlier, Emily was now able to attribute a personal anecdote to the programs.
“I’ve known about Easterseals for a really long time. I’m so grateful the organization is here, because now it’s directly impacted my life,” she shared.
When she first began to receive services at the Easterseals Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Clinic, Madison wore a helmet to protect herself from self-injurious behaviors. Today, she no longer needs it, which is a reflection of the incredible progress she’s made.
“The ABA clinic was a fantastic resource for her,” Emily said. “We noticed so many more skills. She was talking a lot more and she just just became a lot more independent.”
David added, “Maddie has really learned a lot. We’ve been able to work with her better. It’s made life a little easier, even with the challenges that come with raising any child.”
Easterseals was able to give the Jolly family more than just services for Madison. Caregiver training, monthly support groups, among other services, gave the entire family hope, community, and confidence in Madison’s outlook.
“I really appreciate the parent support groups they offer,” Emily said. “Being able to connect with other parents every month and talk about challenges and solutions meant so much.”
Respite services were able to give David and Emily the chance to rest, recharge, and take care of their daily needs, knowing that Madison was safe.
“They have so many different resources,” David explained. “You can’t take them all at once, but you can come back when you’re ready. They’ve been there for us every step of the way.”
Now, Madison is three years old (soon to be four) and is able to grow, learn, and thrive every single day.
Her family knows this progress was possible because these resources were available when they needed them the most. That wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of donors.
“Easterseals did a great job guiding us, but just as importantly, they gave us community,” Emily said.
When asked what she would say to others facing a recent diagnosis, Emily felt strongly: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help and get to know your resources. When you’re ready, reach out to Easterseals.”
